National plan for life to mean life
National plan for life to mean life
National leader John Key is expected to announce today his two-pronged plan for dealing with the worst violent offenders. The first part of the plan will be to scrap parole for criminals convicted a second time of any violent offence attracting a prison sentence of five or more years. After their release, they will be monitored for a fixed term. The types of violent crime targeted include attempted murder, kidnapping, sexual violence, manslaughter, serious assaults, aggravated burglary and robbery. But the most controversial move will be National's plan to put some murderers behind bars for life. Anyone convicted of murder who has previously received a prison sentence of five years or more for violence will be denied any opportunity for parole, meaning they will spend the rest of their life in prison.
National have done more to warp public policy by hate on the issue of law and order than any other party, Simon Powers has been feeding that hate with his 500 press releases on the subject (he once called for this blogsite to be shut down, so deeply had he been drinking from his own well of bullshit that he believed prisoners had access to computers within the three star hotels he believes prisons have become), so I view their ability to pass policy on this issue based on their track record of playing to hate very dimly. The two moves would see parole denied to repeat offenders and life would mean life to anyone who kills with a previous record – the only promise National promise to keep is to immediately build a new prison to cope with keeping people in prison for longer, that’s right folks our underfunded, over stretched corrupt, racist and violent prison system will simply be expanded under National, it’s almost as if the word ‘rehabilitation’ has become as dirty to National supporter ears as the word ‘colonialism’. Let’s also not forget that National will use the building and running of this new prison to open up the privatization of prisons in NZ, in America the private prison industry has created the obscene environment where their prison populations are seen as slave labour camps and harsher longer sentences are advocated for to expand that slave labour market, this abortion of social policy warped by corporate demand for slave labour is not a solution it is a monstrosity. So what are the consequences of no parole for repeat offenders and life meaning life well that means there is NO modifying tools for prisoner behaviour inside prison – there’s no reason why a prisoner with nothing left to gain will moderate or self control any of their behaviour in fact these rules will create deeply institutionalized human beings who are already pretty fucked up, now while I totally disagree with what the Parole system has become under the demands for free beds that have been driven by longer sentences from sensible sentencing pressure but to throw out the only behaviour modifying tools you have is throwing the prisoner baby out with the bathwater, here’s my prediction, I believe these policies will lead to prisons where damaged men with nothing left to lose will turn prison environments into even more violent places where gang membership will be the only way to protect yourself and the public will be shocked by the sudden and rapid increase in prison attacks and will demand harsher conditions and these harsher conditions will provoke riots, these riots will be seen as a slap in the face of conservative society, conservative society will demand even harsher tactics, we will get some dark things agreed to (remember the ‘goon squad’ from Christchurch prison all those years ago, expect more of that sick stuff) and those dark things will get exposed and only then will everyone be left wondering if this was the wise thing to start in the first place. When hate warps social policy the consequences are entirely predictable.
